Guest Coach: Marc Bhalla, LL.M. (DR), C.Med, Q.Arb, MCIArb
The focus of the session is Marc’s book, The Art of Role Play in Dispute Resolution Training, from which we will be presenting a role play and reviewing the 3 key elements of role play learning Marc identifies in his book. In this role play, we meet Wilma and Fred, and Betty and Barney, two couples who have been neighbours for many years, and have now become embroiled in a dispute over their shared fence.

Marc is a prominent mediator and trainer based in Toronto, Ontario. He holds the Chartered Mediator designation of the ADR Institute of Canada as well as international and domestic arbitrator designations. Beyond his dispute resolution practice, Marc is accredited as a trainer by the ADR Institute of Canada and is part of the faculty of the Canadian Collaborative for Engagement & Conflict Management. He is also a regular guest coach for the JADE Mediation Practice Group.
Marc earned a Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School and focused his academic research on online dispute resolution, drawing upon years of practical experience offering conflict resolution services online. Marc also has an Executive Certificate in Conflict Management from the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Law, an E-Commerce Certificate from New York University, an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto’s Trinity College and completed the St. Stephen’s Community House Interpersonal Mediation Program.
He has spoken about conflict management from coast-to-coast across Canada. Marc write extensively about dispute resolution, having contributed to the McGill Journal of Dispute Resolution, the Journal of Arbitration and Mediation, the Journal of the Canadian Collaborative for Engagement & Conflict Management and ADR Update. Marc’s first book, The Art of Role Play in Dispute Resolution Training (www.artofroleplay.ca), was released in November 2020. It combines academic research on experiential learning exercises and practical experience from his involvement in over one hundred role plays.
Marc was the first (and to date only) dispute resolution practitioner honoured with a Distinguished Service Award by the Canadian Condominium Institute and received a prestigious STAR Award from the ADR Institute of Ontario in 2020 in recognition of his leadership and dedication to the field. He is a proud member of the Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators and the South Asian Bar Association. Marc currently co-chairs the ADR Institute of Ontario’s Med-Arb section.
